Heart health is personal for Dr. Sidney Fulmer and Kathy Dunleavy.
In 2004, Dr. Fulmer underwent successful open-heart surgery. He required surgery in 2017 to remove a potentially life-threatening blockage from his carotid arteries.
“The fact that I’m here today and doing well is in large part thanks to the excellent care I received at the Spartanburg Regional Heart Center,” he said.
As a doctor, Fulmer was knowledgeable about trends in medicine and care offered in other hospitals. He had trust in the cardiovascular surgeons and internists who are part of the heart center team and in the nurses and technicians at Spartanburg Regional.
“There’s not any place in the United States I would rather be,” Fulmer said. “You get superb care here.”
For Kathy Dunleavy, it was about getting the best care for her mother, who she brought here from Florida in 2018 for aortic valve replacement surgery. She wanted to make sure her 90-year-old mother had the best possible experience.
“I knew she would get the best care from our cardiologists and she did,” Dunleavy said. “The procedure was a success, and she is doing very well.”
Giving back to heart care
Because of their experiences, Dr. Fulmer and Dunleavy are passionate about the health of Upstate residents. The two are able to give back to the Heart Center as co-chairs of Spartanburg Regional Foundation’s inaugural Heart Gala – Welcome to Wonderland.
The upscale event is slated for Feb. 14 – Valentine’s Day – at the Spartanburg Marriott and will raise funds to support the Spartanburg Regional Heart Center.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death among both men and women. Having facilities, programs, and trained professionals to provide top-notch cardiac care is vital for community health.
“I am so impressed with our heart center, and I really want everyone in the community to realize how lucky we are to have this high-quality resource,” Dunleavy said.
