Dr. Alison Renner sees value in loving where you live

By Staff reports on August 28, 2024

Dr. Alison Renner, a Myrtle Beach native, already feels at home.

Having attended Clemson University for bioengineering and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school—and spending time in an apartment in the heart of downtown Spartanburg, hearing a street performer’s saxophone from her balcony—Dr. Renner is excited to stay local and help Upstate patients as a new family medicine physician.

“I have loved the smaller town and the sense of community here. I absolutely fell in love with that,” she said.

Dr. Renner joins the expanding team at Medical Group of the Carolinas – Family Medicine – Boiling Springs and is now accepting new patients.

She recently graduated from Spartanburg Regional’s Family Medicine Residency Program, where she built lasting friendships with others now serving patients within the healthcare system.

Connecting with people

Dr. Renner chose family medicine because of her love for people and the opportunities to see and care for a broad spectrum of patients.

She previously considered a career in engineering, but realized her heart and strengths were more inclined toward personal relationships.

Her strengths in medicine come from speaking with patients candidly and building relationships to establish trust and support. As someone who loves to immerse herself in the local scene, she enjoys connecting patients with opportunities and resources in the community that promote improved health.

“I love teaching patients about medicine, helping them learn something they didn’t know before, and just making sure they understand exactly what’s going on,” she said.

Dr. Renner mentioned that even as lab work comes back, patients should see a certain number or level and have the freedom to ask questions that she can help explain.

Dr. Renner isn’t the only one in her family with a medical background. One sister is currently a medical student at VCOM, while another sister is a speech pathologist who also works for Spartanburg Regional.

Dr. Renner is married and the mother of a new baby, Harper.

When not seeing patients, she enjoys crafting, baking, sewing, reading and diving into house projects.
