Dr. Soniya Joseph has heart to serve pediatric patients in their formative years

By Staff reports on October 15, 2024

Dr. Soniya Joseph has always had a heart of service, so becoming a pediatrician felt like the natural step toward doing her part.

“Yes, there has always been a love of science, but more so the service part of it was my calling,” she said.

Dr. Joseph has joined the team of providers with Medical Group of the Carolinas – Pediatrics – North Grove and is now accepting new patients and is eager to partner with parents to help their children thrive.

Dr. Joseph grew up in Greenville and has always loved the Upstate.

After going to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia and finishing a pediatrics residency at University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee, she is thrilled to be back home in an environment she enjoys and once again closer to her mother and sisters.

Dr. Joseph has a heart for children and sees pediatrics as an area where she can make the most positive impact. She gets to know her patients and their parents alike, helping them make informed decisions about their children’s health and well-being.

“At the end of the day, the one common goal for the parents and myself is the child,” she said of her training in patient-centered care. “I always try to talk to the child but also hear the needs of the parents. I want to really hear them because they obviously know the patient the best.”

Born to parents who ran a Greenville-based fashion and clothing store, Dr. Joseph is a first-generation physician. Her sisters are also in health care – one works as a nurse; another works as a podiatrist at a VA clinic in Anderson, and another went through medical school and is now doing non-clinical work.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Joseph enjoys being a “fur mama” and taking care of her two cats and two dogs. She loves animals, the outdoors and the mountains as well as cooking, baking and gardening – her father had been an avid gardener, so it has become a passion of hers to take on that hobby.

Dr. Joseph said she has always had a heart for serving and being mindful of where she could be most helpful. Her faith as a Christian has guided that principle and desire, she said.

“I’ve been blessed to have this opportunity,” she said. “Not everybody can have opportunities to do this. I am always making sure I can give back.”
