Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg  

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois, a certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, at the Gibbs Cancer Center Conference room in Spartanburg to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors. Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class.  

If this is your first time attending, a mat and block are provided for your use. Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees.

Spartanburg Medical Center  

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer an infant CPR class to our community.  

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.  

 

Community Blood Pressure Screening  

Monday, Jan. 6, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Senior Action 

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Senior Action Greenville to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension. 

 

Strength Training and Gentle Cardio-Cancer Survivors

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg  

The Survivorship Program is offering semi-monthly workout sessions that will focus on helping you build strength and improve your cardiovascular health through a combination of exercises. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just starting out, our experienced trainers will guide you every step of the way. Join us for this opportunity to boost your overall health and well-being. 

These sessions will be led by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's Sports Medicine Institute. 

These sessions are available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle. 

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program. 

 

Cancer Support Group: Hybrid 

Tuesday, Jan. 7, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg or online  

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to all cancer patients and survivors at no charge. 

Research shows that taking part in support groups, where you both give and receive help, is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Jen Arsenault, LCSW, LISW-CP of Therapeutic Alliance, LLC, Boiling Springs, SC. 

This event will be held in-person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in-person, a virtual attendance option is available for this event. Please email [email protected] to receive the link to attend virtually. 

 

Balance and Breathe Yoga

Cleveland Park Events Center 

Join Carolyn Bailey, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, each Wednesday, for Balance and Breathe Yoga. Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults. This class is designed to help prevent the process of deterioration and loss of muscle mass that can lead to falls. 

Beginners are welcome. You must be able to get on and off the floor without assistance.

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through 6 months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.   

 

Prepared Parents: Infant Care   

Thursday, Jan. 9, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

 

Union Prostate Support Group - Hybrid 

Thursday, Jan. 9, 5 to 6 p.m. 

Union County Carnegie Library or online 

Join us at the Union County Library or online every second Thursday of the month for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through. 

 

Breast Cancer Support Group - Hybrid 

Monday, Jan. 13, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg or virtual  

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to breast cancer patients and survivors at no charge. 

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg. 

This event will be held in-person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in-person, a virtual attendance option is available for this event. 

 

Cardiac Connection – Pet Therapy  

Monday, Jan. 13, noon to 1 p.m.-Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

Wednesday, Jan. 15, noon to 1 p.m.-Heart Wellness Center-Spartanburg  

Interacting with therapy dogs has been shown to improve health in many ways:. Therapy dogs can lower blood pressure and stress hormone levels in heart patients, help reduce the amount of medication some people need to manage medical conditions, boost the immune system, increase the pain threshold, improve motivation for activities (including exercise and social interaction), elevate mood, and decrease feelings of depression, loneliness, and feelings of isolation. Join us this month to improve your heart health with Spartanburg Regionals furriest therapists. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! 

In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one are interested, please join us. 

Spartanburg Prostate Cancer Support Group – Hybrid 

 

Monday, Jan. 13, 5 to 6 p.m.

Join us at Gibs Cancer Center - Spartanburg or online, for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through. 

This month, Dr. Eric Coronato will be sharing about the biopsy procedure that is part of diagnosing cancer as well as any new products on the market for post-prostatectomy patients. 

 

Prepared: Maternity Tour  

Monday, Jan. 13, 6 to 6:45 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

This guided tour provides expectant parents an opportunity to become familiar with the labor and delivery unit, as well as the mother/baby units at Spartanburg Medical Center. All questions are welcomed. Please plan to meet us in the main hospital lobby at the information desk.

Music Therapy 

Tuesday, Jan. 14, noon to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings and emotions, enhancing memory, improving communication, promoting physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Join us at Gibs Cancer Center - Pelham or online, for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow prostate cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through.

We will meet in demo cooking kitchen on the second floor. 

This month, Hal Stewart, LPC, CSAT, CST, CPTT, co-founder of the Center for Sexual and Relational Health, will be sharing about how to navigate intimacy after diagnosis and surgery. Hal has been a therapist for over 30 years and has vast experience with sexual health and healing. 

**Due to the nature of this topic, spouses and or caregivers may be asked to leave the space to allow for more in-depth communication and questions.** 

 

Weight Loss Surgery - Online Support Group    

Thursday, Jan. 16, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online 

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.    

 

Bookbinding and Personal Journal Art Class-Cancer Survivors  

Tuesday, Jan. 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. 

Join us for a book binding and personal journal art class. This session will be hosted by Youmi Efurd, from Wofford College. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Diabetes Wellness Circle  

Tuesday, Jan. 21, noon to 1 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center or online 

Join us at noon on the third Tuesday every month for this hybrid (virtual & in-person) support group. Meetings are designed to have 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15-30 minutes of discussion. Please join the meeting then stay as long as you are able. 

This is a hybrid meeting, so you may come in person or join us virtually through Microsoft Teams. If you would like to come in person you must call or email Madison to reserve your seat in the classroom- space is limited. Contact [email protected] or call 864-560-6487. Prepared Breastfeeding  

Tuesday, Jan. 21, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

Colorful Cooking at Home: Mediterranean Bowl and New Years Goals 

Thursday, Jan. 23, 11 a.m. to noon 

Let's start 2025 off on the right foot with Stacie Snyder, Nurse Manager of the Heart Wellness and Heart Resource Centers. Stacie brings years of Cardiology experience to the kitchen and has seen firsthand how effective lifestyle measures are on heart health. We'll cover them all while whipping up Mediterranean Grain Bowls, a staple in Stacie's home due to their adaptability, easy preparation, and kid-friendly flavors. 

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate, and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be! Join host Registered Dietitian Kerri Stewart from the Joe R. Utley Heart Resource Center each month as she navigates different topics and dishes with the common theme of color.

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available during pregnancy, labor and delivery. In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday.

Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition every first Tuesday of the month.

This interactive online class covers evidence-based changes in birth, breastfeeding, baby care and infant safety, and it provides ways for new grandparents to offer support and assistance to the new family. In just a few hours you will learn what’s new, refresh what you already know and feel more comfortable when called upon to help care for your grandchild.
