Here’s why ‘call, don’t fall’ is more than just a catch phrase inside the hospital
Call, don't fall.
If you've ever been to a hospital, it's a message you've likely seen. It may have been an easy sign to overlook, but this critical message doesn't just apply inside a hospital.
Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System wants to keep older residents off the ground and on their feet at home. As we age, things change. And while some changes are apparent, some go undetected for several years. Eyesight, hearing, balance, strength and bone density can decrease as we mature into our golden years.
The risk of falling increases as we age, and so does the risk of being injured in a fall. Injuries can quickly turn severe, especially considering the medications many older adults take, like blood thinners.
What can we do?
-
We cannot beat gravity, so we must learn to work with it. Knowing your abilities is one of the essential fall prevention techniques.
-
We must also work toward keeping ourselves healthy and strong as we age. Schedule annual doctor appointments. Do balancing exercises daily, along with some resistance training. Resistance training and a healthy diet will help maintain muscle and bone strength.
-
Know your environment. Always keep your house clutter free, know where pets like to rest, and clean up spills immediately. When leaving the house, pay attention and remember the outside world is constantly changing. It is vital to stay alert and remain aware of your surroundings.
-
Know your limitations, and never hesitate to call for help. Call your neighbor to help you reach the pitcher on the top shelf. Call your friend to join the upcoming exercise class with you. Call a rideshare or transportation service to get you to your annual appointments. Call the landlord to fix the broken handrail.
Don't be afraid to call. Allow others to step in and help with your fall-prevention plan.
