November is lung cancer awareness month. Take a walk through the inflatable lungs and see what a pulmonologist sees when looking at your lungs. The tour will provide information about anatomy of the lungs, lung health, disease prevention and the importance of screenings. 

We will also have information about our low dose CT scan for lung screening and our community outreach team will be there to answer any questions. This event is free to the public and is being held at several different locations. 

 

Healthy and Balanced - Oncology Nutrition Support Group 

Monday, Nov. 4, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg  

Maintaining a healthy weight and consuming a nutrient-rich diet after the completion of cancer treatment can be challenging. With the proper tools and support, you can find a healthy balance while achieving your weight management goals. 

Join us monthly and work toward being healthy and balanced. Our nutrition topic for November will be “Does Weight Play a Role in Cancer Survivorship?” 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle. 

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program. 

 

Grief Support Group 

Tuesday, Nov. 5, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

Tyger River Presbyterian Church 

The holiday season can be a tough time for those who are grieving. Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Hospice Home is holding an adult, community support group for those grieving the loss of a loved one. This group is meeting on Nov. 5, 12, 19 and 26 and it is recommended that you attend all four sessions.

Spartanburg Medical Center 

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through six months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.    

 

Music Therapy 

Thursday, Nov. 7, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings and emotions, enhancing memory, improving communication, promoting physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Community Blood Pressure Screening  

Monday, Nov. 11, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Senior Action 

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Senior Action Greenville to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension. 

 

Breast Cancer Support Group - Hybrid 

Monday, Nov. 11, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg or virtual  

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to breast cancer patients and survivors at no charge. 

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg. 

This event will be held in-person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in-person, a virtual attendance option is available for this event. 

 

Prepared Parents: Infant Care   

Thursday, Nov. 14, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

 

Prostate Cancer Screening

Thursday, Nov. 14, 5 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Gaffney 

Each year, one in seven men in the U.S. are diagnosed with prostate cancer, the second most common non-skin cancer. A new case is diagnosed every three minutes, but if caught early enough, the five year survival rate is 100%. 

Do you qualify for this screening? 

-Are you a man aged 50-70 

-Have no primary care doctor 

-Do not have insurance 

-Have not had a PSA draw in the past year 

If you meet the above criteria, you qualify for this screening. The screening consists of only a blood draw and results are provided in seven to 14 days. Registration is required for this event.

November is National Diabetes Month - Are you or someone you love living with diabetes? This is a great time to learn more about the condition in a supportive environment!  

Stacy Eilers, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist will share her expertise on the topic. Join us as she highlights the connection between diabetes and cardiovascular health. 

Cardiac Connection-Pelham is a quarterly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! 

In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one are interested, please join us.

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

This month, Gibbs Cancer Center at Pelham will host a live, in-person cooking demonstration. Only 18 seats are available. If you would like to attend this live event, please register with the link above.

Just the Ticket  

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 4 to 5 p.m.

During this comprehensive course offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

 

Watercolor Christmas Cards Art Class for Cancer Survivors  

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program will offer monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. 

Youmi Efurd from Wofford College will host this session. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Prepared Breastfeeding  

Tuesday, Nov. 19. 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

Cardiac Connection at Spartanburg – Diabetes and Heart Health

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.    

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents 

Thursday, Nov. 21, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

Class information includes information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. 

 

Prepared Childbirth    

Thursday, Nov. 21, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center  

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available during pregnancy, labor and delivery. In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday.  

 

Dear Santa, I Want a Smart Phone 

Friday, Nov. 22, 9 to 11 a.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

Most Americans now own a smartphone, but all the jargon and features can be confusing if you are considering purchasing a new one. 

During this workshop, you will learn some things to consider before your purchase such as intended use and budget, the different types of phones available and where to look for discounts. 

Advanced smartphone features such as health apps, taking photos, taking fitness activity and more will also be introduced. 

 

Colorful Cooking at Home: Sriracha Roasted Chickpea Salad for Diabetes Month

November is National Diabetes Month and Madison Pate, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist is in the kitchen with one of her favorites - Sriracha Roasted Chickpea Salad. The slight heat from the chickpeas will be a nice way to warm our bellies for the colder months and we can't wait for you to see the variety of colorful produce incorporated into the final bowl. 

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate and showcase simple and delicious dishes! Join host Registered Dietitian Kerri Stewart from the Joe R. Utley Heart Resource Center each month as she navigates different topics and dishes with the common theme of color.

Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every first Tuesday of the month.
