For 25 years, Safe Kids Spartanburg has worked to keep children safe.

As an arm of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, Safe Kids Spartanburg helps educate families to prevent injuries and preventable deaths.

Safe Kids Spartanburg is celebrating this anniversary with Safe Kids Day on Saturday, June 2. As part of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church's Community Health Awareness Day, the event will raise awareness and provide resources to protect kids from preventable injuries and deaths due to motor vehicle crashes, fires, drowning, falls and more.  

“Safe Kids Day is a wonderful opportunity for Spartanburg to celebrate kids, learn how to keep them safe and, ultimately, save lives,” said Penny Shaw, program coordinator for Safe Kids Spartanburg. “This is a day where we can all take action to protect kids at home, on the road and at play.”

Top Safety Tips from Safe Kids:

• Use braces, wall straps or mounts to secure unstable furniture or TVs to prevent tip-overs.
• Make sure your child wears a properly fitting helmet when riding bikes, four-wheelers or any other wheeled sports vehicle.
• If your child is an athlete, know the signs and symptoms of concussion and encourage them to speak up if they have been injured.
• Teach kids to look left, right and left again before crossing the street.
• Put all medicine up and away from children. Check for medicines in purses, nightstands, countertops and drawers.
• Children under age 13 need to ride in the backseat of the car.
• Place liquid laundry packets up and out of children's reach and sight.

“As part of Safe Kids Day, families have an opportunity to say ‘I'm All In' to protect kids about issues they care about the most,” Shaw said.

Safe Kids Day will include:

• Bike riding through Safety Town. The first 50 kids will receive a new helmet.
• Free child passenger safety seat inspection
• Free t-shirts for the first 50 children
• Chevrolet of Spartanburg will have a display about children in and around car
• Spartanburg County Law Enforcement teaches how to keep your home safe
• Learn how to be safe in and around water
• Children can climb on the City of Spartanburg Fire Truck, as well as play games
• Learn how to protect your child's identity.
