Yearly preventative checkups encourage positive women’s health

By Taylor Deaton on July 11, 2023

Between careers, family and other aspects of daily life, women are there to balance it all. Sadly, this can mean putting their health at the end of the list.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women who are caregivers are at greater risk for poor physical and mental health.

Dr. Katherine Whitten, OB/GYN at Medical Group of the Carolinas – Woman’s Clinic, understands the demands of being a woman and a caregiver.

“Women often put the needs of others above themselves. They are so busy caring for others that they forget their needs are also important,” Dr. Whitten said.

When starting the conversation to encourage women and girls to take their health off the backburner and make it a priority, Dr. Whitten encourages starting with wellness visits.

Yearly OB/GYN appointments with a physician can encourage women to set health goals, evaluate their mental health, sexual health and physical activities.

With annual visits, women can have open discussions with their providers regarding any abnormalities or concerns they may be experiencing.

“Many look to OB/GYNs for screening exams for breast and cervical cancer; however, those visits can also be important in facilitating healthy behaviors and providing counseling to minimize health risks,” said Dr. Whitten.

Some of the ways women can prioritize their health and well-being include:

  • Take a walk, stretch or exercise every day
  • Connect often with friends and family
  • Keep up with regular health appointments
  • Get at least seven hours of sleep each night
  • Enjoy a healthy and balanced diet

“Being a wife, a mother, a sister and a friend are important aspects of life; however, taking care of your health should take priority,” said Dr. Whitten.
