Trouble sleeping? Sleep studies can help.

By Staff reports on October 10, 2024

Almost 40% of all car accidents are attributed to sleep deprivation.

This grim statistic points to the harm tied to sleep apnea, which can cause not just sleep deprivation but additional issues such as the inability to lose weight, trouble with memory and fatigue.

Left untreated, long-term sleep apnea can lead to serious health risks like high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Sleep apnea may also increase someone’s risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

A sleep study is an effective tool in identifying sleep apnea and getting patients on the right path of treatment.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System offers advanced sleep services to help diagnose sleep apnea and connect patients with the right quality care.

Board-certified sleep specialists, all of whom are pulmonologists, oversee the sleep labs where patients come to a facility to undergo a sleep study.

Spartanburg Regional also offers home sleep study kits. Qualified patients can pick up a kit from a provider’s practice location and undergo the sleep test from the comfort and convenience of their own homes.

“It’s a great screening tool,” said Trisha Fair, the clinical manager for Spartanburg Regional’s Sleep Services. “A home study is a screening tool helping someone figure out if they have sleep apnea.”

Many patients benefit from a home sleep study because the initial barriers to getting tested include troubles with transportation, their own mobility and timing.

“People may not think they have sleep apnea or are reluctant to have a sleep study for a variety of reasons,” Fair said. “However, good sleep can be life changing, and a sleep study is the first step to restorative sleep and optimal health.”

“Sleep studies are great ways to confirm you have sleep apnea so you can start your path to therapy and get on the road to treatment,” Fair said.
