Prepared Parents: Infant CPR

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer an infant CPR class to our community.  

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.  

 

Healthy and Balanced - Oncology Nutrition Support Group 

Monday, Dec. 2, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg  

Maintaining a healthy weight and consuming a nutrient-rich diet after the completion of cancer treatment can be challenging. With the proper tools and support, you can find a healthy balance while achieving your weight management goals. 

Join us monthly and work toward being healthy and balanced. Our nutrition topic for December will be a reflection on what we have learned throughout 2024. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle. 

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program. 

 

Music Therapy 

Tuesday, Dec. 3, noon to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings and emotions, enhancing memory, improving communication, promoting physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Balance and Breathe Yoga 

Wednesday, Dec. 4,  9 to 10 a.m.

Cleveland Park Events Center 

Join Carolyn Bailey, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, each Wednesday, for Balance and Breathe Yoga. Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults. This class is designed to help prevent the process of deterioration and loss of muscle mass that can lead to falls. 

Beginners are welcome. You must be able to get on and off the floor without assistance.

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through 6 months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.    

 

Community Blood Pressure Screening  

Monday, Dec. 9, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Senior Action 

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Senior Action Greenville to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension. 

 

Breast Cancer Support Group - Hybrid 

Monday, Dec. 9, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg or virtual  

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to breast cancer patients and survivors at no charge. 

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg. 

This event will be held in-person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in-person, a virtual attendance option is available for this event. 

 

Holiday Decoration/Ornament Making Art Therapy- Cancer Survivors 

Tuesday, Dec. 10, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program will be offering monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. 

This session will be hosted by Youmi Efurd, from Wofford College. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Colorful Cooking at Home: Festive Filipino Dishes 

Wednesday, Dec. 11, noon to 1 p.m. 

We finish this year out with a spirit of celebration, giving and community culture featuring Gina De La Cruz Turcotte, from the Spartanburg Regional Foundation. 

Join us as Gina shares some Filipino favorites from her family's celebrations filled with color, flavor, and that are easy to adapt to your family's dietary preferences. The dishes include Pancit Bihon, a popular rice noodle base with various veggies & proteins, and Halo-halo, a refreshing and multi-layer shaved ice dessert. 

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be! Join host Registered Dietitian Kerri Stewart from the Joe R. Utley Heart Resource Center each month as she navigates different topics and dishes with the common theme of color.

Spartanburg Medical Center

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class.

During this comprehensive course offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

 

Diabetes Wellness Circle  

Tuesday, Dec. 17, noon to 1 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center or online 

Join us at noon on the third Tuesday every month for this hybrid (virtual & in-person) support group. Meetings are designed to have 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15-30 minutes of discussion. Please join the meeting then stay as long as you are able. 

This is a hybrid meeting, so you may come in person or join us virtually through Microsoft Teams. If you would like to come in person you must call or email Madison to reserve your seat in the classroom- space is limited. Contact [email protected] or call 864-560-6487. Prepared Breastfeeding  

Tuesday, Dec. 17, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

Cardiac Connection – A Heart for Others  

Wednesday, Dec. 18, noon to 1 p.m. 

Heart Wellness Center-Spartanburg 

With the holidays in full swing, it's important to take time to reconnect with yourself and others. Join us as Rosalyn Heers, AGPCNP-PC, joins us to talk about ways to care for your heart and improve health. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! 

 

Weight Loss Surgery - Online Support Group    

Thursday, Dec. 19, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online 

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.    

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents 

Thursday, Dec. 19, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

Class information includes information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. 

 

Prepared Childbirth    

Thursday, Dec. 19, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center  

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available during pregnancy, labor and delivery. In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday.  

 

Veg Edge Potluck

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg  

Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every first Tuesday of the month. 

No need to register. Just show up with a dish to share! Please adhere to WFPBN guidelines (no meat, dairy or oil and minimal added sugar and salt) and bring the recipe to share. Reach out to Lori at [email protected] if you'd like some recommendations about where to find recipe ideas.
