From improv to patient care, Dr. John Efstathiades takes cues from patients
John Efstathiades, DO, has always had an interest in science and taking care of people. He went into the physical therapy and rehabilitation fields as avenues for hands-on, patient-centered care, but soon fell in love with family medicine.
“It became interesting to see all the different types of pathologies. It never gets boring; there is always something interesting,” he said. “Plus, this allows me to treat patients throughout their lifetime.”
He said osteopathic medicine training has also given him the ability to blend patient care and hands-on therapy.
Dr. Efstathiades is now accepting patients as a new physician with Medical Group of the Carolinas – Family Medicine – Landrum.
Lessons learned from improv
Though he grew up in Florida, Dr. Efstathiades also spent time living in New York City. It was there he joined an improv theater.
“Ninety percent of improv is listening and responding to what your partner is saying,” he said. “It’s about taking what someone gives you, responding to it and making it seem cohesive.”
Similar to improv, Dr. Efstathiades enjoys getting to know his patients on a deeper level and being a good listener.
“You have to listen and pick up on subtle hints that they may not even be aware of,” he said. “Being open and listening helps you respond better.”
Home in the Upstate
Dr. Efstathiades, his wife and two young children have lived in Spartanburg since 2017. They enjoy dates in Landrum, hiking, visiting farmers’ markets, sightseeing and continuing their passion for improv with friends when they can.
The population in Landrum is growing, and Dr. Efstathiades said he is excited to get to know his patients in an area with such a community feel.
