Prepared Parents: Infant CPR

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer our community an infant CPR class. 

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.  

 

Healthy and Balanced - Oncology Nutrition Support Group 

Monday, June 3, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg  

Maintaining a healthy weight and consuming a nutrient-rich diet after the completion of cancer treatment can be challenging. With the proper tools and support, you can find a healthy balance while achieving your weight management goals. 

Join us monthly and work towards being healthy and balanced. Our nutrition topic for this month will be “beyond your plate-movement.” 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle. 

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

Spartanburg Medical Center 

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through six months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.    

 

Nature Therapy Walk 

Thursday, June 6, 10 a.m. to noon 

Cottonwood Trail 

The Survivorship Program offers a quarterly "Trails to Recovery" hiking/walking opportunity for nature therapy. This unique offering is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

The Local Hiker, a retail hiking and adventure store in downtown Spartanburg, will help host this series. 

The next nature walk/hike will take place at Cottonwood Trail (River Birch Access - Sydnor Road) in Spartanburg. This trail is great for all physical activity skill levels, beginners included. 

Our experienced session leaders will provide therapeutic engagement through education about the surrounding ecosystem as well as offer meditative journaling and mindfulness activities. 

Please plan to meet in the River Birch Access parking area at 10 a.m. 

Studies have shown that spending time in nature has therapeutic effects on cancer survivors, including reducing stress levels, improving immune function and increasing overall well-being.

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois, certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors.  

Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, a mat and block will be provided for you to use. Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees. 

 

Cancer Survivors Day  

Sunday, June 9, 2 to 4 p.m. 

Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium 

Cancer Survivors Day honors the perseverance and courage of all cancer survivors. 

Please join the Gibbs Cancer Center staff for an afternoon of celebrating survivorship. There will be food, music, giveaways and a photo booth! We have seats for you and three guests and admission is free!

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Senior Action Greenville to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension. 

 

Breast Cancer Support Group 

Monday, June 10, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to breast cancer patients and survivors at no charge. 

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg.

Join us at Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham or online every second Tuesday of the month for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through. 

The speaker is Melissa Hedlund, MS, RD, CSO, LDN oncology dietician with Gibbs Cancer Center and Fay Nutrition. Melissa will be sharing information to help patients currently undergoing treatment and ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle post-treatment. 

 

Music Therapy

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings and emotions, enhancing memory, improving communication, promoting physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

 

Union Prostate Cancer Support Group 

Thursday, June 13, 5 to 6 p.m. 

Union County Carnegie Library or online 

Join us at the Union County Library or online every second Thursday of the month for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through.

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

 

Diabetes Wellness Circle    

Tuesday, June 18, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online  

Diabetes Wellness Circle is an online and in-person support group that supports, encourages and educates anyone living with diabetes. Everyone is welcome. Meetings consist of 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15 minutes of discussion. Please join the forum and then stay as long as you are able.    

 

Art Class-Block Printing  

Tuesday, June 18, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. 

Join us for a block printing art class. This unique offering is available to cancer survivors at no charge. This session will be hosted by The Richardson Family Art Museum. 

 

Prepared Breastfeeding  

Tuesday, June 18, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

Cardiac Connection - Highlighting Men’s Health  

Wednesday, June 19, noon to 1 p.m. 

Heart Wellness Center 

Join us as Cardiac Connection celebrates National Men's Health Month. We'll talk about importance screenings and latest health recommendations specifically for men, and their loved ones. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! 

In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one are interested, please join us.

 

Weight Loss Surgery - Online Support Group    

Thursday, June 20, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online 

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.    

 

Colorful Cooking at Home: Fun with Fermentation  

Thursday, June 20, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. 

Online 

Fermenting at home can be much easier and more affordable than it seems. Mat Lyden is SRHS's Sports Medicine Manager by day but has been experimenting with home fermentation after learning about the health benefits from some of the leading gut microbiome researchers in the country. He will walk us through the needed equipment and some basic recipes for this month's Colorful Cooking at Home. 

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate, and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be!

Baby Lounge

Spartanburg Public Library  

Baby Lounge is a free support group for all birthing people and/or parents to join. It is a safe space to discuss topics of interest, have questions answered by healthcare professionals and to receive support for you and your family.  

We would love to have you join whether you are expecting or have delivered. We meet on the bottom floor of the Spartanburg Public Library downtown in the Inman Mills Children's Room.  

 

Prostate Cancer Screening-Union 

Thursday, June 20, 5 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Union 

One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the second most common non-skin cancer in the United States. A new case is diagnosed every three minutes, but if caught early enough the 5-year survival rate is 100%. 

Do you qualify for this screening? 

-A man aged 50-70 

-Have no primary care doctor 

-Without insurance 

-Have not had a PSA draw in the past year 

If you meet the above criteria, you qualify for this screening. The screening consists of only a blood draw and results are provided in 7-14 days. Registration is required for this event.

Tuesday, June 25, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

During this comprehensive course offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

 

DIY Bee Bath Art Class-Cancer Survivors  

Tuesday, June 25, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. This session will be hosted by Robin Reif from Wofford College on Tuesday, June 25, at 6 p.m. in the Gibbs Auditorium. This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents 

Thursday, June 27, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

Class information includes information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. 

 

Prepared Childbirth

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available during pregnancy, labor and delivery. In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday.  

 

Prepared: LAMAZE (3-week series)

Spartanburg Medical Center  

Lamaze Childbirth education classes at Spartanburg Medical Center serve families no matter what type of birth they are planning for. All classes within the Lamaze Childbirth series present evidence-based information for normal and safe birth, influenced by the Lamaze Six Healthy Birth Practices. Classes provide in-depth information for expectant families, reducing their fear or anxiety while building confidence and preparing them for birth. 

Please note this class is a three-week series and will meet each Sunday for the three-week time frame. 

In this class series you will learn about: 

-Lamaze Six Healthy Birth Practices, relaxation exercises 

-Anatomy/Physiology of normal and undisturbed birth 

-Techniques for your support person, how to minimize discomforts of labor 

-Communicating with your care provider, benefits and risks of common medical interventions during labor 

-Planning for postpartum, breastfeeding and newborn care  

Each Lamaze Childbirth Educator is a labor and delivery nurse and up to date on birthing practices and policies. 

All prenatal education classes at Spartanburg Medical Center include you and a support person with each registration. 

 

Veg Edge Potluck

Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every first Tuesday of the month.
